TFP Review: MB-06 Power Baser by Fans Hobby (Masterpiece Optimus Prime / Ginrai)

MB-06 Power Baser
by Fans Hobby

Fans Hobby:
Fans Hobby may be one of the newer companies on the scene but now on their 7th release (counting special editions) new or not they are one of the strongest companies in the Transformer third party market. They have maintained a strong relationship with the fans. Fans Hobby actually changed designs and aspects of Power Baser over the course of the past year based on communication on social media outlets with the fans. Also I would like to point out that the release was also delayed to further improve the design and future compatibility with MB-11 Gob Bomber add on to be released next year sometime. While some may look at this as a setback or failure I think it was an extremely smart move that shown a commitment to excellence in and belief in their work. Instead of rushing out something that they felt could be improved they simply improved it.

MB-06 Power Baser:
What is MB-06 Power Baser? MB-06 Power Baser is Fans Hobby homage to what we know in the US as Powermaster Optimus Prime or if you grew up watching the Japanese version Ginrai. This is made in a masterpiece style / scaling to match up with Takara Tomy MP-10 Optimus Prime and even MP-24 Star Saber. Made with high quality polymers, die-cast, chromed parts, solid design, light up LED eyes option, and all the articulation you could ask for this is really an amazing set. After posing Power Baser next to the official Takara Tomy Star Saber I am actually starting to prefer Fans Hobby to the Takara Tomy ones. I would be slightly curious to see them do a version of MP-10, I feel we would get a better proportioned better made Optimus Prime than our current standard. Before moving on with the review of the bot though I am going to go ahead and get to the point and maybe save you some time… I went into this review with very high expectations based on what I have been shown in previous releases and I was not let down. If you enjoyed MP-24, collect Optimus Primes, or just masterpiece transformers in general then I feel MB-06 Power Baser is a must to have in your line up and you should pre-order now while you still can. Now on with the show!

Included:
Transformation Guide / Manual
Collectors Card
Power Pilot (Powermaster)
Core (Truck Cab)
Trailer
Dual Twin Blasters
Dual Black Pistols
Dual Pistol Extensions
Eye Replacement – Clear Blue for Combined Mode (LED light up eyes (battery is not included)

Upon Opening box we highly suggest walking through the manual one complete time as it will teach you all the necessary steps to transform Power Baser into its different modes. If you have any difficulty please refer to one of the many videos on our site. It is a simple process once you get it down.

Power Pilot:
This version has some of the best articulation I have seen on a figure this size in a long time. This is not some cheap construction with limbs popping off as many parts are pinned and even includes some ingenious use of a ball joint hinge system to give it an almost life like waist movement. The backpack feels to be metal and of course is all chromed out to match its G1 counter part and standing a considerable bit taller as well as you would expect a masterpiece version to do so. The face sculpt is shows a good likeness to the original.

Core:
The Core of this set is what makes the main robot and also has some incredible articulation as well and making it really fun to just toy around with seeing what poses you can get it into. With it’s only real limitation being no double knee joint but the severe ankle tilts do some to make up for it. The face sculpt on this bot is amazing, really sharp and detailed. Side note when transforming my Optimus head sticks and usually pops off the ball joint then I will have to flip the panel up by the ball joint close the chest then remount the head. Not a big deal but that panel is locked in fairly tight.

Trailer:
With guns mounted everywhere it kind of gives you that Mad Max feeling just not all rusted out. While it maintains the basic trailer shape it is about the same length as MP-10 trailer but is a bit shorter in height. Very solid feel not all floppy with a good weight to it. Everything tabs in tight and has a place. It’s able to easily roll while attached to the Core but the turning radius of the cab is determined by the Twin Blasters positioning, at times it can be extremely hindered if you prefer to face them straight forwards.

Base Mode:
Base Mode is similar to the original but without the ramps. While this form is sturdy and much more likable in person it is the weakest mode of the bunch but I am glad they included it to do a “complete” version of this character so to speak.

Combined Mode:
Combined mode has some of the best articulation of any mode with solid ratchets and and the missing double knee joints from the Core you can get some really nice poses. It has some really nice ankle titles and rockers while not locked into that atypical A-Frame stance that we have some from other releases. This also has an one of the best face sculpts on seen in a long time, I feel they really nailed its its Generation 1 essence. This version also contains no parts forming or extra add on pieces to complete any modes transformation also making it extremely nice.

Comparisons:
Generation One

Titans Returns Powermaster Optimus Prime (Hasbro Version)

Takara Tomy MP-24 Star Saber

Improvements:
I have to admit after comparisons were made my main and only complaint is that the Combined Mode upper thighs were not chromed out to match its G1 counterpart. The core could of used a double knee joint in Robot Mode. Maybe a display stand or base would have been nice but would have added to final cost. I would of loved to see a way to tab the guns in the backpack while in Combined Mode though. Not allot to complain about here guys this is a really well done set they put allot of thought and time into.

Conclusion:
I really feel this is a must buy to most collectors out there. This set I feel is nicer done than Saber was and SS remains one of my favorite bots in my collection. Fans Hobby has shined so brightly I feel they are now eclipsing the originals with their lack of flaws in the figures being produced. I admit that Powermaster Op is one of my favorite characters but this company has done so much more than expected and done it well. My only thoughts now are Gob Bomber / Apex Armor and Black… Bring on Nucleon Quest PM OP!

Future:
As mentioned before I would be curious to see them do a version of MP-10 but I doubt we will see that one for awhile so what are some possibilities we may see from this company? With how strong their designs are and how well they are able to do the Optimus character maybe we can hope for others such as RID Optimus or maybe even I dare to a Star Convoy. Nova Lord and God Bomber / Apex Armor are both due in 2018 which is only a couple weeks away and Nova Lord looks HUGE! Hopes are set high on God Bomber but with how well Power Baser has come out, it’s a solid stand alone bot by himself. Sadly you almost want 2 or 3 of them to display it in it’s many modes.

Pre-Orders:
Pre-Orders for the set have begun many months back but with the release right around the corner. You can order directly from Fans Hobby by click the link located HERE or pick one of our sponsors located on our sidebar, just we believe this to be one not to be missed.

Fans Hobby Collection & Review by TF-Prototype

Fans Hobby MonsterBots
The Fans Hobby Collection & Review

MB-01 ArchEnemy

MB-01 ArchEnemy was our first introduction to Fans hobby as they were a new company at that time fresh on to the scene. ArchEnemy is their interpretation of the Transformers RID line character name Scourge or Black Convoy depending on where you lived.  Scourge / Black Convoy was a Semi Truck with a trailer originally but did not include the trailer (as a side note the trailer is in it’s early prototype stages). The run was extremely popular among fans. With sharp paint applications and die-cast parts these bots are hefty. Joints were solid with many points of articulation and throw in the fact that these are all Masterpiece scaled Fans Hobby lit a fire under fans that has burned brightly since. MB-01 only includes a brilliant red sword to match the original release from the RID line. A gun is not included with this one though.

I do want to point out that is not a paid review I bought several of these bots myself and was only recently offered access to some test shot samples to provide first hand knowledge of upcoming products to our readers. So far it has been a privilege and an honor to work with these guys as they keep the fans up to date on their Facebook page and even take input on improvements from the fans, what more could you ask for? I also want to thank the infamous U.NEM Studios for letting us use their photos to showcase in our review. All other photos are by TF-Prototype.

MB-02 MegaTooth

MB-02 MegaTooth was Fans Hobby’s second release and much to our surprise it was of the MonsterBot we all knew as Repugnus from Generation One line. Repugnus was a two legged monster with a ant-like head with huge pincers located on his mouth and also additional sets for hands. It was quite an usual monster. Once again with great paint applications, die-cast, and MP scaling it was a hit among G1 and MonsterBots fans alike. I do want to point out this bot is CHUNKY with much die-cast due to the pincers.  The monster mode is quite fun due to its pose-ability and almost anime styled eyes due to the way it head was constructed. This though would be the only release by Fans Hobby not to have chromed out eyes while in robot mode, Fans Hobby would later correct this mistake but we will get to that part later. He does include one smaller rifle / pistol but it does not appear to attach anywhere on the monster mode sadly to say. This will be the only release to lack this feature at the time of writing this article.

MB-03 Fei Long

MB-03 Fei Long being Fans Hobby’s third release following on with the G1 MonsterBot line this was their version of DoubleCross. A wicked two headed winged dragon with much pose-ability surprisingly. Now was starting to build up a solid fan base as collectors took note of company still much in it’s infancy but making huge waves with surprising character choices and solid releases. This was not their only secret weapon though, they also seemed to be sticking to certain price points which in all out honesty fans usually pay more for this quality of work in the collector world. It includes dual rifles which can be mounted onto the monster mode. The hands can convert into canons and were never really hands, they were the dragon heads but Fans Hobby would also correct this for fans offering more choices later on.

MB-04 Gun Fighter II

MB-04 Gun Fighter II was the fourth entry into the thrid party Transformer world and this time they threw fans off their trail by producing their MP scaled version of  Generation Two Optimus Prime or other also known as Laser Prime. Optimus transformed into a semi truck exactly like MB-01 as in the original Transformers line the toy of Scourge / Black Convoy was actually a repaint of G2 Optimus Prime but Fans Hobby did not settle for a simple repaint. Instead they now finished out the opening chest mechanism and included a Matrix of Leadership made of dis-cast and highly detailed with a brightly glowing jewel in the center. He also included extra flaps used when in alt mode to better hide the legs and change the shoulder and chest molding. The head sculpt is top notch and very Gundam styled with possible antenna again which only added to the dynamics of this bot. Its really a beautiful piece any collector will be proud to own, much like their previous releases. This included a sword exactly like the one included with MB-01 but a clear-ish purple hue this time instead of red. Also included are two guns one is style like the original Optimus G1 gun in a highly glossed out plastic with main paint apps but interestingly enough when closely inspecting the second weapon you will notice it has a dull flat black finish… Exactly like the one found on MB-01 almost indicating it was meant to fill a void since MB-01 did not include a gun when released.

MB-05 FlyPro (Test Shot Review Sample)

MB-05 FlyPro is the 5th release now from Fans Hobby which will complete the Monsterbot line. This is their version Grotusque a colorful winged two legged creature with a head much like a saber tooth tiger. He includes a double barreled which can be mounted in monster mode as well. This uses many parts from the Fei long mold but once again changing and adding new molds and transformation techniques making the release very much it’s own feel. To take things one step further the include 2 extra faces for every monster bot (MB-02, MB-03, MB-05) and a new visor for Mega Tooth (MB-02) to give him that nice chrome eye effect, Also included are hands for Fei Long now giving you a total of three options available to you for hands. Also included are four sets (yes sets as each one is two pieces) of flame effects that make great use for monster mode firing effects and also as canon fire from Fei Long hidden cannons for example. On top of all this all three monsterbot bio cards are included. This release did not slack off on paint applications or die-cast nor did it mark up the price. This is really a feat and something of a true treat for all collectors of this line and a true loss for any who miss the set. This is something usually seen in much more expensive lines like Soul of Chogokin releases.

MB-06 PowerBaser

MB-06 is their next schedule release. This will their MP scaled version of Generation One Powermaster Optimus Prime / Super Ginrai. The core cab robot mode alone tests shots have shown it to be about te size or maybe slightly bigger than MP-10 before combining the trailer. This will an amazing piece if pulled off and a prize and joy to and masterpiece sized collectors and fans around the world. With Fans Hobby’s track record we suspect this to be a homerun but we will have to wait and see. We have have been offered a chance to possibly get a hands on look at the the review sample when the time comes but until then guys we will have to wait.

Many more greats are planned in the Fans Hobby line such as Nova Lord and RoadBuster. Fans Hobby is a real contender in todays 3rd party world and with their solid record of releases and considering the improvements deployed along the way matched with their price points rather you buy direct or save shipping and buy from one of our sponsors when combing multiple items do not miss out on these guys.

We would like to again thank Fans Hobby for a chance to preview some of these items to inform our fans and also U. NEM Studios for letting us use their photos in our Fans Hobby showcase. This has been a fun review to write and check out the differences in the line as they grew. The robots are very articulated and dynamic. With the addition of the extra faces included with FlyPRo suddenly the Monsterbots become extremely expressive with great face sculpts on each one. My only addition I could think of for these guys would be stands or maybe plaques but that would add to the cost of what we are paying now so I do mind seeking out my own stands but these bots are more than worth it.

TF-Prototype Exclusive Interview: Fans Hobby

Interview: Fans Hobby

Fans Hobby has not been on the scene long but has been making waves since day one with their release of MB-01 ArchEnemy (R.I.D. Scourge / Black Convoy). With die-cast parts, high quality paints, MasterPiece scaling, and exceptional designs Fans Hobby has established their foothold in the third party market and even thought of as a “breath of fresh air” by some collectors. Not to mention their character choices are unrivaled and unique with a great reputation among the fans. TF-Prototype has been fortunate enough to be granted an interview with these future titans of the third party collectibles world.

TFP: Which of the other 3rd Party companies inspired them to make Fans Hobby Happen?
FH: Fans Project & TFC, they set the trend many years ago.
TFP: Any plans on updating your site anytime soon with new projects past the scope MB-11?
FH: Should be few months later.
TFP: Do you think G1 rules your current design aesthetic or is it a more of an all ideas open approach when it comes to the visual design of how the figures look?
FH: It’s part of the inspiration, we do want to inject some other elements in our design.
TFP: Can you explain / or give any clues to what is happening with the green and purple camouflaged MB-10?
FH: MB-10 has a close relationship with MB-04.
TFP: Many fans noticed a refinement in your releases after MB-01, was MB-01 a “tougher” learning experience for the company than other figures as far as getting in sync with the factory and getting the product out you envisioned?
FH: Yes, it is our first figure & there are many to learn in order to make a good balance among design, production & market requirement.
TFP: Can you give us some background on any of the team members? How many?
Who handles what? Designers past works, etc?
FH: It’s a team around 10 people who handle different aspects: design, engineering, production, sales & marketing etc.
TFP: What kind of research goes into finding out what will be profitable
enough for then to pick a character to go with?
FH: We do wanna get a research with a profitable direction, haha…however everything learn from trial & error & observation.
TFP: It seems Generation 2 is more the direction Fans Hobby is heading
with only a slight detour into the RID line and possibly others
(MB-03A), would Fans Hobby ever consider doing more of the RID line?
FH: We would like to explore more possibilities from the market gap or the niche area, so we may explore more from G2 or RID area.
TFP: What inspired Fans Hobby pricing?
FH: The production cost & sales play the critical role in this section.
TFP: Would Fans Hobby ever consider making a character that other
companies have already completed in the past or was that part of the
reasoning behind the G2 direction?
FH: We haven’t considered this point in specific.  As stated above, the main goal is to explore more possiblities in niche area and bring something different to Fans!
TFP: MB-06 Power Baser on an MP scale none the less is quite an ambitious
project, have there been any unforeseen complications in the design /
production process that were unexpected?
FH: Yes, it is a large project that full of challenges from all aspects, and improvements & refinements are with us during the whole development process.  However we’re glad to see the project is going to a positive direction.
TFP: Of course Nucleon Quest was a very popular and rare version of PowerMaster Optimus, does Fans Hobby have any plans of a Black colored MB-06 to match Nucleon Quest or maybe even a Fire Guts God Ginrai?
FH: All variations have been considered & we still haven’t fix any solid planning for the time being.
TFP: Recently Fans Hobby has been showing teasers of MB-03A on the Facebook page, can you tell us anything about this bot?
FH: It’s an interesting project which was developed thru discussions with Shanghai convention organizer, probably dragon is welcome in Chinese market, so we decided to make a special edition for the convention.
TFP: MB-05 FlyPro painted test shots were also recently shown being completed showing off the added hinged and rotating wing joint that MB-03 Fei Long did not possess, also there were a great deal of differences between MB-01 ArchEnemy and MB-04 Gun Fighter II. Our question is it common practice for the designs to never really leave that phase while working with the few parts that get reused as they seem to get many improvements along the way and some even by suggestions of your fans?
FH: There are always blind spots in our development, so good to get suggestions from Fans that we may never consider.  Our team has a passion to improve the products & would like to make them more complete.
This was conducted via email since both teams could not meet in person . We hope this gives you guys an inside look at what Fans Hobby has in store for us and we have possibly helped answered some questions fans may have had. If this the first you have heard of Fans Hobby then we highly suggest you pick up one of their releases to see what you are missing for yourselves. Here at TF-Prototype we have really enjoyed working with Fans Hobby and look forward to what is to come.
Here is a quick gallery showing off each release from Fans Hobby. All photographs seen below are by the ever talented U.NEM Studios.

Since we first wrote our article on MB-05 FlyPro we have since confirmed that this includes extra joints on wings to allow for better pose-ability. Stay tuned!
